Trekking History

Ann thinks treks started in 1997 after Paula Macowan wished out loud that there
was something we could all do to get through the winter doldrums. Our first trek
was in February of 1997, to the Isabella Stewart Gardiner Museum and greenhouses
in Boston, Massachusetts on January 28th. Since then we have visited the following locations (some more than once):

December 16, 2004 A small gathering of members to share design ideas inspired by our Spring '04 trek to Gordon Hayward's garden in Vermont, at Foxfire Farm.
January 17, 2005 Travel to Attleboro, Ma., to Briggs Nursery, for greenhouse relief from winter
February 3, 2005 Trek to the Worcester Museum of Art, to the annual Flora in Winter display of flower design inspired by works of art. Lunch at the museum. A great way to get through February's garden withdrawal.
March 18, 2005 A visit to the Smith College greenhouses annual Spring Bulb display (and a campus garden walk if weather allows). Lunch at Green Street Cafe, Northampton.
April 27, 2005 A visit to greenhouses of Wellesly College, and lunch/walk at Mount Auburn Cemetery for signs of Spring.
May 11, 2005 A return trip to The New York Botanical Garden for a guided tour (by Kim Tripp, Head of the NYBG) of the Spring Bulb display, and a tour of the Spring rock garden (guided by Carlo Balistrieri, Curator of the Rock garden)
Tentative plans for June 2005 Another overnight to the New York area - Tuesday, June 14-Wednesday, June 15. sites to visit: Old Westbury Gardens, the Isamu Noguchi Museum, The Conservatory Garden in Central Park, Wave Hill, and maybe The Brooklyn Botanic Garden/maybe PepsiCo. Stay overnight at a B&B in Brooklyn.
September 12, 2005 a visit to Garden in the Woods, Framingham, Ma., (home of the New England Wildflower Society) to see what's wild in the woods in Autumn.
October 20, 2005 a walk at the Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain, Ma., to ogle fall fruits and see the Franklinia in bloom.
November 16, 2005 to prepare for Thanksgiving, Carolyn Voss introduced a group of us to the wonderful Russo's Market in Watertown, Ma., source of organic produce (and more!); thence to the Asian Market in Newton where Ginny Deselms led us in amazement to chicken tongues and bubble tea.
December 2005/January 2006 - In lieu of an "away" trek, Ann Hanscom led a number of members in a series of flower arranging workshops; part of BVG preparations for participation in the Worcester Art Museum's Flora in Winter exhibition
January 27, 2006 a mass exodus of BVGers visited the Worcester Art Museum, for lunch in the cafe, and a viewing of Flora in Winter, in which our own arrangement (interpreting Gilbert Stuart's "Mrs. Perez Morton") received rave reviews!
February 23, 2006 Worcester Flower Show
March 30, 2006 a visit to the Glass Flowers exhibit at the Harvard University Museum, followed by picnic lunch on the top of the hill in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
April 19, 2006 a return visit to Blithewold Mansion, Bristol, R.I. for the joyous Spring bulb display (so hopeful!). Afterwards we met Lisa Dady of the Newport Historical Society for a tour of historic Prescott Farm and a view of the newly restored gardens at Whitehorne House (Newport). Returning home via Jamestown, R.I., we walked on the cliff at Fort Wetherill and viewed West Passage from Beavertail Light.
May 18th, 2006 we anticipate 17 trekkers will have beautiful weather for the 2006 Beacon Hill Garden Club Tour!
End of June, 2006 (date not carved in stone yet) - western Ma., Edith Wharton's The Mount, and other gardening points of interest.
